Mission

The mission of the Probate Section is to support members of the Philadelphia Bar Association in their legal practice, particularly in probate, trusts, and personal planning. The Section aims to provide professional education, resources, and guidance on both the substantive and procedural aspects of the law. Additionally, it seeks to educate the public on issues related to these areas, promote opportunities for community and pro bono service to low-income and/or disenfranchised populations, promote the study and improvement of these fields, and collaborate with judicial, legislative, and administrative bodies to advance these objectives, while aligning with the Charter and Bylaws of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

A Message from the Section Chair

Welcome to the Probate and Trust Law Section. Our Section serves as a forum for members to discuss probate, wills, trusts, guardianship, and estate law issues.

Our Section is instrumental in formulating probate and trust laws on a statewide basis, educating and developing resources for practitioners to aid them in the practice of probate and trust law, mentoring young lawyers, and serving the needs of the public at large.

I encourage you to join and become actively involved in one or more of our Committees: Business Planning, Diversity, Education, Elder Law and Guardianship, Legislative, Orphans' Court Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Publications, Rules and Practice, Taxation, or Technology.

We look forward to you joining our listserv, subscribing to our calendar and podcasts, attending the regular meetings of our committees, and becoming a part of our Section.

Call to Action

Philadelphia VIP

VIP is in need of volunteers and mentors for estate planning, guardianship, and especially probate/estate administration matters (where the only asset in the estate is the home in which the client lives). VIP is the agency of last resort for low-income Philadelphians and consistently receives more requests for assistance than the current pool of volunteers can handle. Attorneys are needed to represent clients or to serve as mentors to other volunteers who do not have expertise in these areas. Please reach out to VIP staff attorney Mike Jones at (215) 523-9561 or mjones@phillyvip.org to discuss how you can help serve clients in need.
