The Business Planning Committee provides educational programs and discussion groups that examine the issues at the intersection of estate planning and business ownership. Many clients have as the foundation of their wealth the ownership of businesses. These businesses might have been started inherited or by the clients themselves. Some clients will want to pass the business on to children or other family members, while others will opt to sell the business. Either choice requires planning that includes lifetime gifting, considerations of fairness among family members, minimizing both income and death taxes, shareholder agreements and working to maintain family harmony and cohesiveness. The continuing retirement of the baby boom generation has brought these issues to the forefront of estate planning. We invite those interested in these conversations to join the Business Planning Committee.
