The Business Law Section’s Boots on the Ground initiatives reflect a long standing commitment to meaningful, hands on community engagement. Inspired by the Bar wide Boots on the Ground Initiative launched during Chancellor Albert S. Dandridge’s tenure, the Section brings together its members to support projects that connect the legal profession with the broader Philadelphia community.

Through these initiatives, Section members volunteer their time, skills, and resources to support students, schools, and community partners. The programs are designed to be practical, impactful, and accessible to attorneys at all stages of their careers, while reinforcing the Business Law Section’s values of service, leadership, and inclusion.

Examples of Past Initiatives

Over the years, the Business Law Section has supported a variety of community focused efforts, including:

Educational Field Trips

Section members have partnered with the School District of Philadelphia to sponsor and chaperone field trips for elementary school students, including visits to the National Constitution Center. These experiences were designed to recognize positive student behavior, expose students to civics education, and provide opportunities that many families might not otherwise be able to access.

Support for School Communities

Through initiatives such as Backpacks From the Bar, the Section has provided backpacks filled with school supplies to students attending Philadelphia public and charter schools. These efforts supported school communities by helping ensure students began the academic year prepared to learn.

Student Engagement and Mentorship

Section volunteers have participated in career day programs and other school based activities, giving students exposure to legal careers and positive role models from the Philadelphia legal community.

These examples illustrate the type of hands on service the Business Law Section seeks to promote through Boots on the Ground initiatives. Program formats and partners may evolve over time in response to community needs, while the Section’s commitment to direct engagement remains constant.
