Remembering Janice Jackson

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Janice Jackson, the Philadelphia Bar Association's longtime Membership Services Assistant, who died last week after a brief illness.

Before joining the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Foundation in 2015, Janice spent many years at the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania, where she was equally admired for her dedication and kindness. She brought that same commitment to her work here, serving with warmth, professionalism, and a genuine care for others. In her role, she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that every member’s experience was seamless and welcoming.

Janice was more than a colleague – she was a cherished friend. A three-time breast cancer survivor, she embodied strength, resilience, and grace. She was always ready with a helping hand, a kind word, a quick joke, a story, a proud photo of her family and pets, or a festive touch to mark her favorite time of year – Halloween. Her enthusiasm for all things spooky brought joy and smiles to all who knew her.

Beyond her work, Janice was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a passionate animal lover and advocate. Her presence and contributions have made the Philadelphia Bar Association a stronger and more compassionate organization.

She will be deeply missed.

In honor of Janice’s lifelong love for animals, contributions in her memory may be made to ACCT Philly or the Philadelphia Zoo.

The Family Court Help Center Needs *Your* Help

For the better part of a decade the Family Court Help Center, staffed by Philadelphia Legal Assistance, has provided help to pro se litigants in family court. That vital assistance is in jeopardy due to the impending expiration of dedicated funding that will not be renewed. A working group from the Bar Association's Civil Gideon and Access to Justice Task Force has been meeting regularly for several months to secure short-term funding for this important resource and planning efforts to obtain reliable support for years to come. You can do your part by donating to PLA!

Wellness Survey for PA Lawyers

A Research Project examining mental wellness of women lawyers was recently launched under the direction of the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession, which must be completed before the extended deadline of Dec. 17, 2025. As a part of the research, a virtual Survey has been launched and the results from the Survey will be helpful in not only determining experiences of men and women who are or have previously practiced law in the U.S. but also, will provide the researchers with valuable information to formulate recommendations for developing solutions for those experiencing mental wellness challenges and creating more equitable workplaces for all attorneys. The primary purpose of this survey is to collect perspectives from women/females and men/males in the legal profession about stressors in their workplace, what they do for self-care, and ways their employer responds to these situations and promotes wellness.

Thanks to Kathleen Wilkinson, Special Advisor to the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession and a co-chair of its Mental Wellness Committee for bringing this to our attention. Kathleen previously served as Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar and President of the Pennsylvania Bar.
