Chancellor's Column: Voting Season Is Upon Us – It Takes Just a Few Minutes to Make Your Voice Heard

In the general election this Tuesday, November 4, Philadelphians will elect the city’s next district attorney, choose candidates to serve on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Philadelphia Municipal Court, and vote on whether sitting judges in those courts should be retained for another 10-year term. In addition, all Pennsylvania voters will vote on the retention of Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justices Justice Christine Donohue, Justice Kevin Dougherty and Justice David Wecht; Pennsylvania Superior Court Judge Hon. Alice Dubow, and Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Hon. Matthew Wojcik.

In preparation for the general election, our Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention has worked tirelessly for months to evaluable and issue ratings for each of the candidates for judicial office or retention.

Perspectives

Standing Together for Justice

November invites us to reflect on what we value most: justice, community, and the shared responsibility we carry to protect both. At the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, this month represents a powerful intersection of celebration and challenge as we honor progress and renew our collective commitment to equal access to justice and the democratic principles that sustain it.

Around Our Community

Haverford College’s Black Squirrel Invitational Mock Trial Tournament

Judges needed for the competition this year on weekend of November 8-9, 2025 at Philadelphia’s City Hall. Judges are responsible for scoring student attorneys and witnesses as they compete in a mock trial. In some cases — depending on your preference — judges may be assigned to preside and rule on objections. No experience other than a basic understanding of rules of evidence is required.

We will be providing training sessions before each round to familiarize you with mock trial judging as well as light breakfast and lunch and — of course — the chance to watch some great mock trial!

There will be two rounds each day from 9:00-12:00 and 2:00-5:00 with the training sessions starting 30 minutes before each round. You may sign up for one, two, three, or even all four rounds. We ask that you are able to commit to the round(s) you indicate availability for as we are relying on you to show up and to help us make this the best tournament it can be.

2025 Annual Amber Racine Turkey Drive

Renamed in honor of our beloved Amber Racine, the longtime co-chair who championed our effort for many years, the Turkey Drive identifies local families in need of our support during the holidays. As the fluctuating economy continues to affect the community, and as Philadelphia’s poverty rate continues to increase, we are asking for your support to help meet our goal of providing Thanksgiving dinners to even more families this year.
