Volunteer Attorneys Needed for Life Planning Clinic

Looking for a low-commitment and rewarding way to give back to the community? Volunteer with the Probate and Trust Law Section’s Diversity Committee as we join SeniorLAW Center to co-host an in-person pro bono Life Planning Clinic! The clinic will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 9:30 am to 1 pm at Stradley Ronon Stevens and Young, 2005 Market Street Floor 26, Philadelphia, PA . Members of the Probate and Trust Law Section are encouraged to donate their specialized skills to help low-income Philadelphians avoid guardianships and tangled title, preserve generational wealth, and ensure their wishes are respected.

At the Clinic, volunteer attorneys will draft simple
life planning documents for elderly low-income Philadelphia clients, including simple wills, health care powers of attorney, financial powers of attorney and living wills. Document templates will be provided, and virtual training will be provided prior to the day of the event. Volunteer attorneys will meet with clients to draft their documents. Local law students are also invited to join the attorneys as volunteers to coordinate the drafting of documents in real time at the meeting!  In addition, we are looking for 2 notary volunteers.  If you have a notary in your office who can assist, please indicate as much in your sign-up email to the organizer, as detailed below.  There is no additional commitment beyond spending the morning drafting the documents with SeniorLAW Center’s clients.

If you are interested in volunteering for this Clinic, please email Chloe Mullen-Wilson at CMullen-Wilson@TimoneyKnox.com by Friday, September 19, 2025.

We hope you will consider joining us for this opportunity to assist the community. There is high demand for these clinics – your efforts will be greatly appreciated by clients who would otherwise not have access to this important service.

Paffuto – More Than Just a Great Brekkie

I’m always on the lookout for new places near where I live at 7th and Washington in South Philly. When feisty newcomers like Nano Wheedan’s Taco Heart (a block away from me) arrive, it can transform a tiny, long neglected space into a neigborhood anchor.

Around Our Community

The State of Immigration in America: Citizenship Under Threat

New immigration policies have changed the citizenship process. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is reviving neighborhood investigations of citizenship applicants, which may include interviews with neighbors, employers, coworkers, and others. USCIS has also changed the “good moral character” standard, which previously disqualified individuals who had committed serious crimes from becoming citizens. Now, an applicant must prove that they have had a positive influence in their community to meet this standard. Additionally, the current administration continues to pursue efforts to end birthright citizenship, despite the initial executive order being blocked by federal courts, and has started a denaturalization campaign.

During this program, HIAS PA’s Citizenship and Family Unification Program Manager, Lori Alexander, MSW, and Executive Director, Cathryn Miller-Wilson, will discuss these and other policies that have impacted the citizenship process, as well as ways that community members can help local immigrants.

This program is open to the public.

Behavioral Health in a Time of Polarization: Supporting Legal Professionals When Silence Isn’t Neutral

In today’s increasingly polarized social and political climate, law firms face a growing tension between the responsibility to foster psychologically safe workplaces and the perceived risks of speaking out on divisive issues. At the same time, lawyers and legal professionals are experiencing rising rates of stress, burnout, and moral fatigue – challenges that are exacerbated by workplace cultures that may remain silent during times of societal upheaval.
