Public Interest Spotlight

Reducing Homelessness by Helping Clients Resolve Outstanding Eviction Judgments

Many Philadelphians are just one unexpected event away from falling behind on their rent and suddenly facing eviction. The loss of a job, a lengthy hospitalization, or other unforeseen expenses such as funeral costs can quickly lead to eviction proceedings that create a permanent and public record that lasts long after the crisis has been resolved. The Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP) is frequently contacted by individuals whose rental applications have been repeatedly denied due to their eviction history, and as a result, are at imminent risk of becoming homeless or unable to leave their temporary city shelter. Helping clients address and resolve outstanding eviction judgments is a growing part of HAP’s legal practice.
