WHEREAS, Gabriel (Gabe) L.I. Bevilacqua immigrated to Philadelphia from Italy at age 7, earned a BA from Saint Joseph’s University in 1970 and a law degree from Temple University in 1974; and

WHEREAS, Gabe Bevilacqua worked from 1973 to 1984 in the Philadelphia City Solicitor’s Office, rising to chief deputy, head of major trials, and chairman of the litigation department; and

WHEREAS, he joined the law firm Saul, Ewing, Remick & Saul in 1984, where he became a partner and focused on commercial litigation and healthcare until his retirement in 2022; and

WHEREAS, Gabe Bevilacqua was a leader in Philadelphia, championing the Italian American community, mentoring young lawyers, and working to improve and modernize legal institutions; and

WHEREAS, Gabe Bevilacqua was a longtime member of the Philadelphia Bar Association who served the Association for 20 years in elected roles, and became the 77th Chancellor in 2004; and

WHEREAS, Gabe Bevilacqua was also an active leader in a number of other organizations including serving as the president of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, a longtime member of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Chancellor of the Justinian Society, and Chair of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s disciplinary board; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his numerous professional accomplishments, he is remembered for his gracious demeanor, genuine warmth, positive outlook, devotion to his family, and love of fine wines and Italian cuisine, as well as his commitment to fairness and his advocacy against ethnic stereotyping;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Philadelphia Bar Association adopts this resolution in recognition of the character, contributions and achievements of Gabriel L. I. Bevilacqua, and in honor of a beloved and respected colleague, devoted family member and faithful friend.
