WHEREAS, Michael E. Kunz has served as Clerk of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania with distinction since May, 1979; and
WHEREAS, Michael E. Kunz is the longest serving Clerk of Court in the federal court system and the longest serving clerk in the history of the Eastern District; and
WHEREAS, prior to becoming Clerk of Court, Michael E. Kunz served as Deputy Clerk from February, 1962 to December, 1975, and as Chief Deputy Clerk from January, 1976 to April, 1979; and
WHEREAS, as Clerk of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Michael E. Kunz has administered the oath of office to 56 federal judges; and
WHEREAS, for more than three decades, Michael E. Kunz expertly managed the caseload of one of the busiest districts in the federal court system, including asbestos claims, antitrust cases, pharmaceutical class actions and other complex litigation; and
WHEREAS, Michael E. Kunz oversaw the successful implementation of electronic filing of court documents in the Eastern District; and
WHEREAS, in 1992, Michael E. Kunz was honored by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts with the Director's Award for Outstanding Leadership; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Michael E. Kunz, the Clerk's Office of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has earned a national reputation for excellence; and
WHEREAS, July 1, 2016 will mark Michael E. Kunz's retirement as Clerk of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Philadelphia Bar Association hereby recognizes the extraordinary accomplishments of Michael E. Kunz during his distinguished tenure as Clerk of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and expresses gratitude for his valuable service to the court and the legal community.
