RESOLUTION ADOPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE PRO BONO TASK FORCE TO RECOGNIZE OUTSTANDING PRO BONO SERVICE BY LAW STUDENTS

WHEREAS, in December 2001, Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Allan Gordon empanelled a Pro Bono Task Force to comprehensively evaluate the need for, and the delivery of, pro bono legal services to the needy, disadvantaged and disenfranchised in Philadelphia;

WHEREAS, the Pro Bono Task Force, after extensive research and investigation, submitted a Report, including Findings and Recommendations ("the Report") to the Board of Governors on June 27, 2002;

WHEREAS, the Board of Governors, after discussion and upon oral motion made and duly seconded, accepted the Report for comment and study;

WHEREAS, the Pro Bono Task Force recommended that the Philadelphia Bar Association recognize outstanding pro bono service by area law students;

WHEREAS, the Board of Governors recognizes the importance of recognizing and encouraging outstanding pro bono service by area law students;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Philadelphia Bar Association approves, accepts and supports this recommendation and asks the Young Lawyers Division to coordinate with the Philadelphia Bar Foundation to develop a mechanism to formally recognize and publicly honor area law students who have provided more than 100 hours of uncompensated and non-credited legal services to the poor, disadvantaged and underserved.
