The Mass Incarceration of Domestic Violence Survivors:
An Examination of the Criminal Justice System's Response to Self-Defense in Domestic Violence

Program Originally Presented Wednesday, October 15, 2025

In our society, violence is generally not tolerated; however, there are a few exceptions. Most exceptions involve the protection of life. In such instances, not only is violence acceptable but it may be celebrated. However, a survivor of domestic violence who engages in self-defense against an abuser is not considered a hero.  This stems directly from the public’s tainted view of victims of domestic violence.

This CLE course will expound on the reasons for the lack of mercy and compassion in criminal investigations of survivors who used self-defense against an abuser.

Attend this program to hear an examination of the criminal justice system's response to self-defense claims in domestic violence matters.
