The Fate of College Athletics After House: Legal and Practical Perspectives

Program Originally Presented Monday, June 30, 2025

College athletics have undergone a seismic shift in recent years that impact multiple practice areas of the legal profession, including labor law, intellectual property law, contract law and antitrust law. Payments to athletes for their "name image and likeness" (NIL) and billions of dollars in revenue-sharing from their school's media rights deals and game ticket sales will transform college athletics forever. The "amateurism" model championed by the NCAA for decades is dead.

But what will college athletics look like under these new compensation structures? How will universities with limited financial resources that are not part of the "Power" conferences afford to recruit and pay their athletes? What happens to non-revenue "Olympic" sports that generate no money for their school's athletic programs? What are the implications of these new payment structures for women's sports under Title IX? Will Congress weigh in on the current chaos in college sports?

Join leading industry executives, scholars and sports law professionals to discuss:

  • Practical impacts of athlete compensation on colleges and universities
  • Whether these new compensation structures create their own antitrust issues for the NCAA and athletic conferences
  • Institutional responses to the additional financial burdens imposed on universities by these payments
  • The applicability of Title IX to these payments, which will overwhelmingly go to male athletes
  • How does this shift in compensation impact the legal status of college athletes as "employees"
What are the prospects for federal legislation and regulation of NIL and revenue-sharing

Learn about these issues and more from our expert panelists as they take a deep dive into the ever-changing state of college athletics.
