Mind the Gap: Generational Perspectives on Lawyering and Advocacy

Program Originally Presented Thursday, April 24, 2025

As Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z lawyers converge in firms and the courtroom, their distinct communication methods, lawyering styles, preferences, and expectations introduce a unique set of challenges. Understanding the variety of work styles, desires, and needs of others can significantly enhance how we interact, collaborate and advocate.

The 1st hour of this CLE program will begin with the introduction of the characteristics, preferences, and historical context of each generation, and provide an overview of the generational breakdown within the legal profession. In the 2nd hour, a panel will address the intergenerational dynamics in the legal profession, highlighting:

  • Interoffice Relationships & Communication – How generational differences impact workplace interactions, including challenges related to colleagues, mentors, supervisors, mentees, and associates.
  • The Judges’ View from the Bench – Observations on how different generations of practitioners present themselves in court, common habits or pitfalls, and how they relate to judges of different generations.
  • Jury Persuasion Across Generations – A focus on advocacy techniques that account for jurors spanning four or even five generations.

Attend this program to learn how to recognize lawyering perspectives unique to each generation that can be essential to understanding differences in interactions with clients and counsel, advocacy strategies, and courtroom behavior.
