Alternatives to Guardianship

Originally Presented on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

Recent changes have been made to Pennsylvania’s Guardianship laws to protect our society’s most vulnerable population and reduce the amount of abuse and exploitation suffered by alleged incapacitated persons (AIP). It is extremely important for practitioners to have the most up-to-date knowledge of this nuanced practice area, as well as the experience and skillset necessary to provide AIPs with the best representation possible when litigating guardianship matters in the Orphans’ Court.

This CLE will provide an overview of the new Act 61 rules, and what the Court has seen since its inception.  Panelists will also provide an overview of the alternatives to guardianships and put them to use as we apply them to various fact scenarios. This course will serve as a certified training for guardianship Court-appointed counsel.

Attendance at this program provides an overview of Act 61, guidance on alternatives to guardianship, as well as prepares attendees to serve as court appointed counsel in Philadelphia Orphans' Court in guardianship proceedings.

Panelists:
Honorable Sheila Woods-Skipper
Administrative Judge - Orphans’ Court Division
First Judicial District

Jenimae Almquist, Esq.
General Counsel, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging

Bess M. Collier, Esq.
Partner, Feldman & Feldman, LLP
