The Next Chapter: Seasoned Lawyers Using Their Legal Skills for People Who Need It the Most

Program Originally Presented Thursday, March 6, 2025

Seasoned attorneys have a lifetime of experience in the practice of law which can be utilized for the benefit of people in need of pro bono representation.  If you have retired from the day-to-day practice of law or if you’re contemplating retirement in the next few years, this CLE program will explain how you can undertake pro bono engagements without many of the obligations of active members of the Pennsylvania bar.

In May of 2018, the supreme court of Pennsylvania adopted Pennsylvania rule of disciplinary enforcement 403, creating a special emeritus status that allows retired attorneys to volunteer their expertise for the provision of pro bono legal services. Volunteer emeritus attorneys help to narrow the gap between the need for and the availability of free legal services through their work with legal aid and other nonprofit programs. Emeritus attorneys need not obtain their own professional liability insurance; they are covered by their approved eligible legal aid organization. Emeritus attorneys also have reduced CLE requirements.

Attend this CLE to learn about the PA Supreme Court’s license requirements for Emeritus attorneys. Hear from several public interest legal organizations that need your skills and experience and discover the questions you should ask when you volunteer.
