Act 44 and Probation Reform in 2024

Program Originally Presented Tuesday, July 23, 2024

On July 11, 2024, Act 44 – the Probation Reform Bill – went into effect across the state. This timely CLE begins with an overview of the content of the bill and its various provisions from the perspective of the legislature and the designers of the bill. Panelists will then examine the vast changes the Act makes to the way sentencings and violations of probation have historically been handled in Philadelphia. Practical approaches to understanding the bill’s provisions and real-life applications in court will be explored to assist attendees in advising clients, understanding the consequences of violating probation, and advocating with judges and other court actors.

All criminal practitioners should attend this program to understand how Act 44 is changing Pennsylvania's probation system.

Panelists:
Elisa K. Downey-Zayas, Esq.
Director, Alternative Sentencing Unit
Defender Association of Philadelphia

Dana Bazelon, Esq.
Policy Director
Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office
