My First Federal Trial 2024: Proper Procedure and Successful Advocacy

Program originally presented Tuesday, October 1, 2024

Hosted by the Federal Courts Committee and presented with the Judges of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Courts

The handling of a lawsuit in federal court is much different than state court practice. Not only are the stakes usually much higher but the federal court has its own Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of Evidence.

This CLE program offers fundamental guidance to attorneys with little or no experience trying federal cases, and acts as a refresher course for attorneys looking to brush up on best practices for federal trials. Hear practical advice on how to handle a federal lawsuit from the filing of the first pleading to the trial of the case. The program, taught by federal court judges, and experienced practitioners, provides proven trial strategies and techniques that can help you with your first or next federal trial.

Topics to be addressed among others:

Pre-Trial Matters

This panel will discuss all things trial-related before the opening statements, including pre-trial conference, jury selection, motions in limine, exhibits, and more.

Conveying Information to the Jury

This panel examines information relayed through lawyers and testimony including opening/closing statements, lay witnesses, expert witnesses, cross examination, etc.

Trial Technology and Post Trial Matters

This panel will address the use of trial technology, AI, the introduction of evidence, and post-trial motions.

Panelists will also provide a brief introduction to the Federal Court system and the Clerk's Office and highlight the importance of knowing your trial judge and their applicable courtroom procedures.

A MUST ATTEND program if you're interested in developing or enhancing trial advocacy skills at the federal level.
