Wellness, Civility and Thriving in the Practice of Law

Originally Presented on Wed., January 10, 2024

Practicing law can be likened to running a marathon. To sustain our careers, we need to set aside time for refueling to avoid burn out. This challenge of work-life integration means we must put wellness practices into our busy, daily work lives. Moreover, the American Bar Association has stated that wellness is an essential part of a lawyer’s ethical duty of competence.

To sustain wellness as practicing attorneys, we also must practice civility with colleagues, opposing counsel, judges and clients. The ability to be civil is intertwined with our ability to manage stress in a profession with high demands of excellence, timeliness, and accuracy.

This presentation will address:

  • The intersection of wellness and professional responsibility
  • How wellness is part of an attorney’s duty of competence
  • The obstacles lawyers face in supporting their physical and emotional health
  • The importance of building relationships with colleagues for well being
  • How connecting to a purpose larger than ourselves contributes to a lawyer’s health
  • Mindset and concrete strategies to incorporate wellness into our daily lives
  • The role of mindfulness in managing stress.
  • Identifying the challenges to practicing wellness and learning techniques for counteracting those challenges
  • Ways to structure time to include some type of wellness in your busy day.

Attend this program to learn how to thrive and achieve professional satisfaction as attorney by incorporating wellness into your daily life.
