My Opposing Counsel Just Used a Derogatory Slur! What Should I Do Now? - Discussing the Acceptance of Bigotry within the Legal Profession

Program originally presented Thursday, August 17, 2023

In a profession that is adversarial, it is inevitable that communication with the other side will sometimes include unprofessional and derogatory language.  However, the effective practice of law requires continuous communication with the opposing counsel.  As our society moves further away from respect for different cultures and beliefs, these communications are increasingly including racist, sexist, homophobic and other prejudicial language directed towards the attorney.  This is occurring in the private sector, the public sector, during depositions and during trial.  This increased use of discriminatory language is expanding the secret culture within our profession that accepts and welcomes bigotry.

In this CLE program, panelists will address the proper manner to respond when a discriminatory term is directed towards you in your professional capacity, and how to ensure you are not assisting the expansion of this culture.

Attend this program to hear an examination of the acceptance of bigotry within the legal profession and how to address discriminatory language directed at you in legal proceedings.
