This CLE program will address the differences in the appointment and role of a Guardians ad Litem (GAL) in custody and dependency actions. The panelists will explore the rule changes which permit a GAL to include a child’s statement to their GAL in their report, and testify at trial about the statement, subject to satisfying the Rules of Evidence. The program will also examine ethical considerations in serving as a GAL, including understanding the scope of your appointment, determining whether GAL work may conflict with your other cases, learning how to communicate with the child and confidentiality, and more.
