SECURE Act Updates: Are Our Retirement Plans Finally Secure? And Where Do We Go From Here?

Program originally presented Wednesday, March 8, 2023

Building upon the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act 1.0) which became effective January 1, 2020, its second act, the SECURE Act 2.0, contains even more significant changes to the laws governing retirement savings and with it, additional client planning opportunities. Now, we are embarking on the impact of SECURE Act 2.0 and how the law affects practitioners and their clients, strategies in estate and tax planning, and practices for retirement planning.

Hear the panelists from the March 2023 Probate & Trust Law Section Quarterly address the following topics:

  • A comprehensive update of SECURE Act 1.0 and the draft regulations, and the best practices in light of the changes enacted by the law.  How have they been advising their clients the past few years?
  • A discussion of the newly enacted SECURE Act 2.0 and the changes that it has made to the prior law.  A side-by-side comparison of any new updates will be provided.
  • How has the loss of the stretch IRA for non-spouse beneficiaries affected estate planning with clients?
  • Estate planning issues in a post-SECURE Act world.
