Intersectionality Explained: What It Is and Why It Matters to the Legal Profession

Program originally presented Wednesday, February 8, 2023

Many diversity, equity and inclusion efforts emphasize the importance of understanding intersectionality, but many people only have an abstract understanding of its meaning. As people of color and others with marginalized identities often report that an intersectional perspective is crucial in understanding and interacting with them on a day-to-day basis, understanding intersectionality is crucial to understanding the experiences of people who are different.

In this CLE presentation, Dr. Kanter will provide a brief historical and contextual overview of the term to clarify any misunderstandings. He will then walk participants through a series of perspectives and exercises to bring intersectionality to life in day-to-day interactions in common legal settings, in efforts to reduce bias and stereotyping, increase empathy, and maximize the success of interactions across different individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Learn what intersectionality is and why it's an important part of modern advocacy, client-relations, professional interaction and in the legal profession in general.
