Stress, Sleep and Wellness: Is Lack of Sleep Killing Your Practice?

Originally Presented Wednesday, August 17, 2022

The legal profession is one of the most sleep-deprived professions. Sleep deprivation affects both physical and mental health. Sleep disturbances can exacerbate the symptoms of many mental conditions including stress, depression and anxiety. Long-term health depends on the regeneration that occurs during deep sleep. Sleep stimulates the secretion of hormones that regulate tissue regeneration, liver cleansing, muscle building, breakdown of fat stores, normalization of blood sugar, and restores its chemical balance. The brain forges new thought connections and helps memory retention. Sleep is when our body does all of its critical repair work. For most people, the bulk of the body’s repair work occurs between 10 pm and 2 am, so ideally, we are getting to sleep before that time.

It is a common misconception that people need less sleep as they age. Rather, people often require more sleep with age, as the number of REM cycles per night decreases with age, therefore leaving people more tired. Sleep is one of the most valuable moments in which maintaining a balance between work and home life is essential. From a first-year attorney to seasoned attorneys, a good night’s sleep is essential for productivity and well-being.

This CLE program will outline the stages and architecture of sleep. Different morbidities commonly associated with sleep deprivation will be reviewed. The cognitive and mental health issues that occur when sleep deprived will also be addressed.  Lastly, hear ways to incorporate healthier sleep hygiene practices through types and timings of food consumption, stress reduction, and mind-body practices to improve the quality and quantity of sleep to suit an attorney's lifestyle.

Attend this program and learn how appropriate sleep not only improves your mental and physical health, but ultimately your productivity and well-being.
