Psychology and Bias: Addressing Everyday Acts of Bias and Exclusion in 2022

Originally Presented Tuesday, August 16, 2022

Since the summer of 2020, the legal profession has increased attention to the myriad of everyday experiences of bias and acts of exclusion that impact under-represented minority judges, lawyers, staff, and clients. Almost everyone agrees that solving these problems is vital to the success of the profession and to the values we all hold dear. Yet, the field is awash with confusions and disagreements about the nature of everyday bias, its scope and severity, and – crucially – what actions are needed for progress and how to overcome the many obstacles to success.  Combining the latest psychological science on these issues, real life examples and experiences, and work with hundreds of “offenders”, Dr. Kanter will review these themes, present concrete strategies for addressing bias at the individual and organizational levels and discuss how to overcome what can at times feel like insurmountable obstacles.

It has been said that “being biased blinds one to the fact that they are part of the problem.” Attend this program and hear a combination of psychological science and concrete examples to help us identify and address bias, as well as receive guidance to combat bias at an individual and organizational level.
