The Fairmount Fire: Dissecting the Impact of Poverty on a Client’s Crucial Life Decisions

Program originally presented Monday, June 6, 2022

As attorneys, it is our duty to help the court view the world from our client’s perspective. Effective advocates, convince the trier of fact to believe that their client’s decisions were reasonable for a person in their circumstances. This often includes explaining limited capacity, mental illness, low education level and past trauma. When applicable, this should also include explaining the impact of poverty. It is difficult to explain the impact of poverty to the court, if the attorneys themselves does not understand. Comprehending the influence of poverty in the lives of their clients is crucial to providing effective advocacy.

This CLE program will equip attorneys with the knowledge of how poverty often collides with multiple areas of law in the lives of impoverished clients, even after they have counsel.
