Representing Threatened Gardens

Program Originally Presented Tuesday, June 28, 2022

Gardens and green spaces provide reliable sources of healthy food, and they help communities revitalize and reclaim their neighborhoods. But Philadelphia’s gardens and green spaces are at risk due to gentrification, rising property taxes, and development pressure. An increased number of gardens are being sold at Sherriff’s sale. The Garden Justice Legal Initiative (GJLI) is a project of the Public Interest Law Center which provides legal representation, policy research and advocacy, and community education to community gardeners and market farmers in the Philadelphia region. Through GJLI, the Law Center also connects gardens with pro bono counsel. To expand the capacity of the Philadelphia legal community to represent gardens, this CLE presentation offers lawyers guidance to help them navigate the issues that gardeners regularly face. Topics will include common issues arising in actions to quiet title through adverse possession and navigating real estate negotiations and transactions with the City of Philadelphia and the Land Bank.
