Let’s Talk Microaggressions, a Call for Allyship

Originally Presented Wednesday, December 15, 2021

“Microaggression” has become a common term in today’s vernacular of diversity and inclusion. The term microaggressions was first coined in the 1970's by Harvard Medical School psychologist Chester Pierce as a reaction to observing insults exchanged between white and black students. Later in 2007, Columbia University psychologist Derald Sue further popularized and defined the term. Used to describe a variety of behaviors, it can feel like a somewhat amorphous concept unless viewed through specific examples.

Our esteemed speaker and educator, Iveliz R. Crespo, Reed Smith's Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisor will:

  • Identify various types of microaggressive behavior
  • Examine the impacts on those experiencing this behavior, as well as how such conduct affects our legal system
  • Offer suggestions and guidance on how participants can learn to:
  • Address such conduct individually
  • Work to change a culture so that such behaviors are no longer acceptable

Hear what constitutes microaggressions and receive tips to individually decrease microaggressions, increase levels of cultural sensitivity, and communicate to foster a more diverse, inclusive, and effective workplace environment.
