AI Prompting and Pitfalls for Legal Professionals

Program Originally Presented Thursday, April 16, 2026

Artificial intelligence tools are rapidly becoming part of everyday legal practice, but effective and ethical use requires more than simply typing a question into a chatbot. This CLE course provides legal professionals with a practical, hands-on introduction to using generative AI tools responsibly, efficiently, and in compliance with the Rules of Professional Conduct.

Participants will learn to craft effective prompts to produce accurate, relevant, and useful outputs for legal tasks, including drafting correspondence, summarizing documents, conducting preliminary research, and improving workflow efficiency. The program will also explore common pitfalls, including hallucinations, confidentiality concerns, bias, overreliance on AI-generated content, and ethical and professional responsibility issues arising from the use of AI in legal practice.

Through real-world examples and practical guidance, this CLE course will help attorneys and legal professionals understand when AI can be a valuable assistive tool—and when human judgment, verification, and caution are essential.
