A Crash Course on Caste

Program originally presented Thursday, March 26, 2026

Have you heard of caste but never really understood what it is? Is caste religious? Is caste about occupations? What is the difference between caste and race? Does federal law prohibit caste discrimination?

The legal community in the United States is generally less familiar with caste-based discrimination and its impact on civil rights. However, efforts to end caste-based discrimination in certain regions in the United States have grown considerably in the past few years—making caste an issue that American attorneys need to understand.

This CLE will serve as a primer on caste to educate attendees about terms, caste discrimination throughout the world and the United States, and the current legal landscape surrounding caste discrimination.

Attend this program to explore the history and structure of caste, examine caste-based discrimination domestically and globally, and understand current efforts to address it through civil rights law.
