Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Wesley R. Payne IV released a statement in tribute to Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Max Baer, who died overnight on September 30. Chief Justice Baer was first elected to the Supreme Court in 2003 and has been Chief Justice since 2021. He was set to retire at the end of this year, after he reached the Court’s mandatory retirement age of 75.

In response to the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade over the summer, and to the recent rise in gun violence, including a mass shooting on South Street in Philadelphia and the killing of a teenage football player in Roxborough, the Board of Governors passed resolutions at its September meeting urging a stronger government response.

The state’s three largest bar associations, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Allegheny County Bar Association, have jointly filed an amicus brief in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in support of the implementation of Rule 8.4(g) of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
