Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Wesley R. Payne IV released the following statement in tribute to retired Senior U.S. Circuit Judge Hon. Dolores Sloviter, who died on October 12. Sloviter was the first woman judge to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the fourth woman to serve on a U.S. Court of Appeals. She served as the Third Circuit’s chief judge from 1991 to 1998.

“We were saddened to hear of the death of Judge Sloviter, who had a distinguished and pathbreaking judicial career,” Payne said. “Judge Sloviter was a longtime member of the Association’s Federal Courts Committee and a former chair of our Fidelity Award Committee. In 1997, our Women in the Profession Committee honored Judge Sloviter’s many accomplishments with its Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Award, which recognizes outstanding women attorneys and jurists in the Philadelphia area. She will be greatly missed.”
