Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Wesley R. Payne IV issued the following statement on the mass shooting that occurred over the weekend on South Street in Philadelphia:
“We are frustrated and saddened to be issuing a statement on yet another mass shooting, this one in our own City. Like the recent gun-related tragedies in Buffalo, N.Y., and Uvalde, Texas, this is a tragedy that may have been prevented by common-sense gun legislation, including increasing the legal purchase age from 18 to 21 and enacting a ban on assault-style weapons.
“We also must remember that the shooting on South Street was one of several mass shootings to occur in the U.S. this past weekend, and that residents of our City lose their lives and are otherwise negatively impacted by gun violence nearly every day. We urge lawmakers at both the state and federal level to take action before additional lives are lost or altered forever.
“We stand in solidarity with the families and communities of the three Philadelphians who were killed in the South Street shooting and with the 11 others who were injured. We will continue to advocate for these needed reforms.”
