Philadelphia Bar Association Issues Statement in Support of Funding for the Philadelphia Justice System
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Wesley R. Payne IV issued the following statement in support of funding for the Philadelphia Courts, District Attorney’s office and the Defender Association of Philadelphia in the City’s fiscal 2023 budget:
“The Philadelphia Bar Association urges City Council and Mayor Kenney to provide full and fair funding for our City’s justice system, including the Philadelphia Courts, the District Attorney’s Office and the Defender Association of Philadelphia – funding we believe is critical for advancing the rule of law
“As we emerge from shutdowns created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Courts, DA’s Office and Defender Association have skillfully managed a sizable case backlog and ensured that residents are not stuck in protracted legal limbo. This is particularly important in the case of our City’s most disadvantaged residents, many of whom receive representation through the Defender Association.
“Full funding for these departments helps to ensure a fair and equitable legal process for City residents, and allows employees of these agencies to be able to do their best work at providing a critical service.”
