In honor of 2022 Law Week, the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division will hold Legal Advice Live in-person from 12-2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 at the Parkway Central Library, along with an expanded version of its phone-based LegalLine program from 12-6 p.m. The Philadelphia Bar Association will celebrate Law Week 2022 from Monday, April 25 to Friday, April 29 with a number of community service events coordinated by the Association’s Young Lawyers Division and presented by volunteer attorneys. Programs include an in-person Legal Advice Live program being held Wednesday, April 27 at the Parkway Central Library and school-based programming to introduce students to legal careers.
This year, Law Week will be presented in a hybrid model to connect with the community as COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift. The theme for this year’s Law Week, as identified by the American Bar Association, is “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.” The theme will include topics such as constitutional change in the United States, social movements that lead to change, and shifts in U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence, among others.
Legal Advice Live will be held from 12-2 p.m. April 27 in the Heim Center (which is named for former Bar Association Chancellor Robert C. Heim) on the first floor of the Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine St. The Young Lawyer’s Division will offer an expanded version of its monthly call-in LegalLine from 12-6 p.m. that day. Philadelphia residents can visit the library or call (215) 238-6333 for advice on family law, landlord-tenant disputes, employment law and other topics. LegalLine is typically held from 5-7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
“Law Week, the marquee event for the Young Lawyers Division, allows lawyers to present themselves as resources and mentors to the community,” said Mike Jones, chair of the Young Lawyers Division and a senior staff attorney at Philadelphia VIP. “From educating children about the practice of law with Lawyer in the Classroom to guiding our neighbors who seek assistance with legal issues in Legal Advice Live, Law Week is an opportunity for lawyers to give back, while the community benefits with free legal advice and education that they might not have had the chance to obtain otherwise.”
Law Week will also include the Lawyer in the Classroom program, where volunteer attorneys will visit Philadelphia schools to talk and answer questions from students about different careers in law. Philadelphia area students are also invited to participate in the Edward F. Chacker
Poster Contest and
Essay Contest. Students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade are invited to create a poster depicting the 2022 Law Week theme. High School juniors and seniors are invited to enter an original essay on the provided prompt and the winning essay wins a $1,000 college scholarship.
