Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Wesley R. Payne, IV, released the following statement condemning comments made on a recent podcast by Amy Wax, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School:
“We applaud the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School for starting the process to impose sanctions against Professor Amy Wax, who continues to double-down on her racist, derogatory comments. Her most recent comments show that she has more interest in attracting attention to herself rather than taking the time to understand the harm that she is causing to our community.
“We are about to begin Black History Month, a time when I encourage everyone to seek out meaningful ways to reflect on our history, educate themselves and find actionable ways to both celebrate diversity and continue to combat the history of racial inequality in this country. Committing ourselves to truly understanding our past and taking concrete steps to do better in the future is the most powerful response we can make to people like Professor Wax.”
