The Philadelphia Bar Association issued the following statement in honor of Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Angelo J. Foglietta, who passed away on September 28. Judge Foglietta was elected to the Court of Common Pleas in 2011 after working for the Philadelphia Law Department, including as Chief Assistant City Solicitor in the trial division. In that role, he established the Expedited Settlement Program, the first of its kind for the City. He also worked in private practice, focusing on insurance defense, coverage disputes, surety and fidelity law and commercial litigation.
On the Court of Common Pleas, Judge Foglietta first served in the Criminal Trial Division’s major jury program. He had been working in the Civil Trial Division since 2015, presiding over complex litigation including wrongful death, medical malpractice cases and products liability trials.
He was vice chair of the Tort and Insurance Committee of the American Bar Association’s General Practice Section, served on the Alumni Association Board for Widener Delaware Law School, and did volunteer work with the Senior Citizens Judicare Project, the Special Olympics, Volunteer Stand Down Philadelphia, and the United Communities of Southeast Philadelphia.
“We were saddened to learn of the death of Judge Foglietta, who had been a member of our Association since his admission to the Bar in 1977,” Chancellor Katayun I. Jaffari said. “He had a long and distinguished career as an attorney and on the bench, and we were grateful for his generosity in sharing his knowledge and experiences as an active member of our State Civil Litigation Section, which will be honoring him in the future. We send our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed."
