The Philadelphia Bar Association applauds retired Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Sandra Schultz Newman on the naming of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s Philadelphia Courtroom in her honor.
Justice Newman was the first female elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, serving from 1996 until her retirement in 2006. Prior to her election to the Supreme Court, Justice Newman served as a judge on the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court from 1994 to1995. She was the first female Assistant District Attorney in Montgomery County and spent more than 20 years in private practice. She graduated from Villanova University law school and received a bachelor’s degree from Drexel University and a master’s degree from Temple University.
“I and other members of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s current and past leadership were honored to attend the ceremony naming the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s Philadelphia courtroom after Justice Newman,” Jaffari said. “Justice Newman has been a valued leader in our community for decades and we congratulate her for this great honor in acknowledgement of her distinguished career and decades of service.”
“Our Association’s Board of Governors was proud to pass a resolution in 2006 when Justice Newman retired from the bench, recognizing her many accomplishments, including serving as the Supreme Court’s liaison to the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania from 2002-2006. In 2022, Justice Newman was among our 50-Year Club inductees,” Jaffari said. “We thank her for all of her contributions to our Association; for her impact as a trailblazer for other women in law and on the judiciary, and her continued impact as a friend, colleague and mentor.”
