Judge Beetlestone is the second woman to serve the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania as Chief Judge

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Katayun I. Jaffari issued the following statement congratulating U.S. District Judge Honorable Wendy Beetlestone for being selected Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and thanking outgoing Chief Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg for his leadership.

“We would like to congratulate Judge Beetlestone for being selected as the next Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She is only the second woman to hold the position and we believe her long track record of experience as an attorney, general counsel and 10 years as a District Court Judge in Philadelphia will serve her well in this role,” Jaffari said. “We are also grateful to Judge Beetlestone for her long-time service to the Philadelphia Bar Association community, including as a past president of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation and an active participant and speaker for programs by our Sections and Committees. In 2006, Judge Beetlestone co-chaired the Raising the Bar campaign, a joint effort by the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Foundation to increase funding for Philadelphia’s public interest law organizations, raising more than $1.5 million. We look forward to working with Judge Beetlestone in her new role.”

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Judge Beetlestone served as a law clerk with U.S. District Court Judge Hon. Richard S. Gawthrop III from 1993 to 1994, and then worked as an attorney for Schnader Harrison Segal and Lewis from 1994-2002. From 2002-2005, she served as general counsel for the School District of Pennsylvania. She was an attorney at Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin and Schiller from 2005 until being nominated as a District Court Judge for the EDPA by President Barack Obama in 2014.

“We would also like to thank Hon. Mitchell S. Goldberg for his leadership as Chief Judge,” Jaffari said. “We greatly value our Association’s strong partnership with the EDPA, which has resulted in some of our Association’s most well-attended CLE programs and the annual Federal Bench Bar Conference.”
