Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Jen Coatsworth issued the following statement congratulating U.S. District Judge Mitchell S. Goldberg for being selected Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and praising the accomplishments of outgoing Chief Judge Juan R. Sánchez.
“We would like to congratulate Judge Goldberg on being selected President Judge of the EDPA. His 16 years on the Court and experience heading initiatives including its Magistrate Judge Utilization Committee, and leading at the national level as a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on Defender Services, will serve him well in his new role,” Coatsworth said. “He has also been a valued member of our Federal Courts Committee, which organizes some of our Association’s most well-attended CLE programs and the annual Federal Bench Bar Conference.
“Our Association would also like to thank Judge Sánchez for his effective leadership during his five and a half years on the Court, and for continuing the strong working relationship between the Bar Association and the EDPA,” Coatsworth said. “Judge Sánchez has worked to improve and modernize the court, while also capably navigating challenges related to the 2018-2019 government shutdown and the COVID-19 pandemic. We have been proud to partner with him on these initiatives and in his efforts to diversify the court, including improving juror diversity. We wish Judge Sánchez well in the next phase of his career.”
